FBI Cyber Crime Report 2024: $16.6 Billion Lost to Online Scammers

USA – The FBI cyber crime report 2024 was released yesterday by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), with a combined information from 859,532 complaints of suspected internet crime, reporting a loss of $16.6 billion to online scammers.

Top Cyber Crimes, Hotspots & Most Affected Group

Personal data breaches, phishing/spoofing and extortion were the leading cyber crimes by the number of reported cases in 2024.

In these, the victims of fraud especially those involving cryptocurrency lost the most, totaling to $6.5 billion.

According to the report, Texas, California and Florida recorded the highest number of complaints, making them the 2024 cyber crime hotspots.

As per the most affected group, the people over 60 years old submitted the highest complaints and recorded the highest number of losses amounting to around $5 billion.

The average loss among this group was $83,000.

Majority of people under the age of 20 were somehow unlikely to be scammed, and only recorded 18,000 complaints in 2024.

Overall, 2024 saw an increase in cyber crime losses by 33% compared to the previous year.
