The Korea’s National Assembly in December 14, passed a bill to impeach Yoon Suk-Yeol after his short-lived martial law after calling it an insurrection.

This was coupled by continuous nationwide protests by both those who supported him and the majority who sought his stepping down as South Korean president.

He was arrested in January and later was released in March which saw the South Korean global image tarnished with continuous protests rocking the nation to a stand-still.

What the Case Against him was Based Upon

Despite the continued upheaval in the nation, Yoon wasn’t ready to step down, rejecting the impeachment bill passed by the opposition-run National Assembly even despite the public protests nationwide.

The case was therefore filed to establish whether he broke any law based on the following actions:

  1. His declaration of martial law.
  2. His attempts to arrest politicans.
  3. His deployment of the army to the National Assembly.
  4. His writing up of a martial decree.
  5. The raiding of the National Election Commission under his orders.

How Yoon Suk-Yeol Defended Himself

In his defense, Yoon Suk-Yeol argued that the opposition was paralyzing the nations’ affairs by the continued impeachment of his administration’s officials and their attempts to cut the state budget.

This was however dismissed and his impeachment upheld.

Both the ruling party and opposition accepted the verdict, with the opposition calling it a victory of the people.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the acting president, is to manage the upcoming election in June, which the opposition is projected to win.
